Fuji Xerox Australia wins Sustainability category at Australasian Reporting Awards

11 June 2010

Fuji Xerox Australia is proud to announce that it has won the Sustainability Reporting category of the 2010 Australasian Reporting Awards (ARA). The award was presented at the Awards Presentation Dinner on 10 June 2010.

Sydney, 11 June 2010 - Environmental sustainability is well-embedded in the Fuji Xerox Australia business. The company has a long-standing commitment to environmental responsible product design, an end of life product stewardship program that is second to none, and ISO-certified environmental site management. Fuji Xerox Australia is committed to working with suppliers and customers to ensure that sustainability challenges and opportunities are addressed across the value chain.

Fuji Xerox Australia has been measuring its performance against its sustainability commitments since its first Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) report in 2005, and every report since then has been independently assured. Their fifth Sustainability Report published in 2009 has been recognised by the ARA for its completeness, credibility and innovative approach to web-based communication.

Amanda Keogh, Manager of Environment and Sustainability at Fuji Xerox Australia was delighted, saying "We are honoured to be recognised with this award," she said. "We believe that environmental sustainability should be a core business practice and work hard each year to reduce our footprint - this ensures that the business as a whole is sustainable. It follows that that the progress against our aims should be reported transparently to stakeholders and customers," she added.

"The annual Sustainability Report is a critical publication for Fuji Xerox Australia and we are delighted that our efforts and our presentation of the results meet ARA’s high standards."

One of the success stories in Fuji Xerox Australia’s sustainability journey is its Eco-Manufacturing Centre, a state-of-the-art engineering facility for the remanufacture of parts and sub-assemblies removed from equipment during service which helps to significantly reduce the amount of electronic waste that ends up in Australia’s landfills. Having won several awards, including United Nations Global 500 Roll of Honour, the centre celebrates its tenth year of operation this year.

Fuji Xerox Australia runs an Environmental Management System which aims to reduce the environmental impact of its business operations as part of its sustainability commitment. In 2008-09, the company achieved reduced carbon emissions by 19 per cent, water use by 37 per cent, and paper use by 1.6 per cent. The company also sets targets to reduce their environmental footprint, which is tracked in the Sustainability Report.

Nick Kugenthiran, Managing Director at Fuji Xerox Australia, commented on the approach to sustainability in the company’s engagement with its stakeholders. "Many companies claim to seek long term sustainability, but it may not always flow through the entire business as tackling these issues systemically is a real challenge," he said. "Fuji Xerox Australia has relished this challenge and taken a leadership role to demonstrate sustainability in a large company to our customers, suppliers, partners and the wider industry." he added.

Fuji Xerox Australia’s efforts have been rewarded this year as the company emerged as a finalist in the 2010 Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Award. Fuji Xerox Australia’s Queensland-based customer ENERGEX also recognised the company’s efforts by selecting them as a finalist in ENERGEX’s Innovations in Sustainability Award category, which it won last year.

ARA is a not-for-profit organisation, established 60 years ago to encourage effective communication of financial and business information. The awards are held annually.
