Innovation in managing student spaces

Innovation in managing student spaces

In our previous blog post on Artificial Intelligence (AI), we discussed AI being used to place unique patterns in a document to track copyright. This was just one example of the type of innovation Fuji Xerox is working on that could make the lives of teachers and school administrators easier. At Fuji Xerox’s laboratory in Palo Alto (PAL) and at our Asia-Pacific Innovation Hub located in Sydney, we are working on other technologies that will also have applications in education. An example of one of these technologies is LoCo. What is LoCo? LoCo is a new framework that can provide highly accurate room-level location sensing using a supervised classification scheme. LoCo uses Bluetooth …

How to begin Digital Transformation at School – after EduTech

No school is equal… Every Transformation is different   In all our time in working with schools it has become increasingly clear that no school is the same. Every school has different goals, different challenges and different priorities. That being said, all go through a remarkably similar process to tackle digital transformation, albeit with different processes and outcomes in mind. Last week at Edutech 2016 we presented the four, “not too simple” steps toward digital transformation to which just about any school can relate.  The reason I say they are “not so simple” is that at first glance it looks like a sensible linear approach to start digitising data and automating processes, but …

Step by Step Digital Transformation after EduTech

Step by Step Digital Transformation after EduTech

I loved Edutech this year with exciting presentations about how the digital world can change your brain (Baroness Susan Greenfield) and insights from students who have created their own apps/followers/companies all whilst studying for significant exams. But I was struck by the focus on classroom digital transformation. I do understand that that is where the school’s core business lies but digital transformation in administration is equally important and the flow of data and information between the two business areas is critical for improving student experience and learning outcomes. Imagine that your budding entrepreneur registers for your school and you have captured all that information upfront in your application process. Your teachers can create …

How Digital Transformation Elevates Education

How Digital Transformation Elevates Education

Digital transformation is a hot topic in any industry as companies pin their hopes in a “transformation” that will deliver efficiencies, cost savings and a better customer experience. Maybe these can be achieved but the reality is outlined in recent research by Accenture and AIIM* which shows that most companies are still largely “traditional” (paper-based processes). In fact that same research from 2015 stated that 15% of interviewed organisations had yet to begin a formal digital transformation journey. Education has a double challenge in running a two speed transformation across the business of education and across the business of administration. Whilst the transformation in the classroom is happening naturally, driven by digital native …

Why you need to prioritise sustainability, and what’s needed to give focus to it

Why you need to prioritise sustainability, and what’s needed to give focus to it

In recent times, issues such as climate change, renewable energies and considering the impact of non-renewable resource use have gained importance and public visibility.  This hasn’t been limited to the news and media, as both consumers and businesses have begun to seriously consider sustainability issues as part of their selection process when they work with or for organisations. For companies, this means a need to start thinking about how traditional operations can be transformed, and brought in line with current sustainable thinking and the expectations of customers and the market, overhauling print operations, reducing waste and making operations more sustainable. Why is sustainability so important? A McKinsey Global survey found that a growing number of companies …

Innovation in the Cloud: it’s time to adopt

Innovation in the Cloud: it’s time to adopt

The cloud has quickly moved past buzzword status to become something that many businesses use on a daily basis, thanks to constant innovation and reliability of services. What’s more, it can now offer significant cost improvements over more traditional IT operations. In fact, a recent study from International Data Corporation (IDC) exploring cloud adoption and usage uncovered some interesting statistics. Greater profits and powerful technology IDC found that organisations using cloud services report profits 2.5 times greater than their peers. What’s more, they’re 81 per cent more likely to push for increased collaboration across the organisation. IDC also found that these companies were twice as likely to utilise analytics to provide greater insight into their business …

Digital Printing – Continuing a Long Standing Tradition Towards Innovation

Digital Printing – Continuing a Long Standing Tradition Towards Innovation

By Michael Gillis, National Sales Manager (Graphic Communications), Fuji Xerox Australia It’s hard to believe that it’s only been 20 years since digital colour production printing first announced itself, walking on stage at a print exhibition. And even though none of us saw any of the end product, this marked the start of digital colour production printing’s presence on the landscape of commercial printing. Of course, digital printing has a far longer history than just the last twenty years. It can be traced all the way back to 1938, when Chester Carlson first invented xerography. Xerox has been developing printers for decades, and around the world many people still use the brand term …

Is empathy the root of all good design?

Is empathy the root of all good design?

And if so how do you embed this in your business? When we talk about design, we typically think in terms of functionality (what a product does) or aesthetics (how a product appeals to our senses). Too rarely, however, do we approach design through the eyes of Human need (the consumer) – in other words, with empathy for the problem. Yet when we apply empathy to design, regardless of the purpose or size or scale of the idea at hand, we become more likely to create things that focus directly on human needs, both practical and emotional. Good design is rooted in a deep understanding of people. Their wants, needs, and habits must …
