Carbon Calculator
Fuji Xerox Australia has a long-term commitment to improving sustainability performance – both our own and that of our customers. We believe a sustainable office document system will reduce environmental impact, maximise productivity, improve document accessibility, and lessen total cost of ownership whilst providing a flexible, reliable and responsive document platform for organisational needs. Our RTA case study demonstrates how we have delivered on that promise.
We fully support our customers’ drive to improve their environmental performance and to that end we have developed tools that can assess aspects of an organisation’s document system in environmental terms. Our ‘carbon calculator’ estimates energy consumed through the operation of an office document infrastructure and our ‘environmental scorecard’ allows organisations to evaluate their printing practices, procurement, recycling and equipment management. Both tools illustrate opportunities for improvement, helping organisations to identify where they can do better on their sustainability journey.
Carbon Calculator
Fuji Xerox Australia has developed a carbon calculator that estimates the energy consumed through the operation of an office document infrastructure. We can calculate the carbon emitted through use of equipment by understanding the make-up and age of an organisation’s document infrastructure and the volume of documents copied and printed.
In many cases organisations do not have a clear picture of their document infrastructure. Using data collected over almost 10 years conducting office document assessments we can create a hypothetical baseline for organisations based on industry sector and the size of their organisation in full time equivalent employees.
The calculator can also illustrate the potential for carbon emissions reduction by optimising the document infrastructure. We can show how replacing and/or consolidating devices reduces carbon footprint while providing enhanced functionality and a platform for future innovation.
This calculator excludes the carbon footprint of paper use, product manufacture, distribution and disposal. It provides an indicative measure of energy use and should not be used for the purpose of formally reporting organisational carbon emissions, as its calculations are based on informed assumptions that may vary. The calculator is most suited for use with medium to large organisations where the potential for device rationalisation exists.
Independent Validation
Energetics, a leading carbon management consultancy, have independently validated the calculator and provided the following opinion:
“In our opinion, the model used as the basis for the carbon calculator is a reasonable means for estimating the carbon emissions savings that would potentially result from changing the configuration of printing and copying devices within an organisation.”
